On A Wholly Unrelated Note

Garret October 10, 2011 Metal, Music, Rock No Comments

So just in case you thought that Shabazz Palaces post was gonna let you get a sense of where my musical offerings are going to lead, here’s a curve ball:

Om, the finest purveyors (to my knowledge) of doom/stoner metal meditation music. Birthed from the remains of Bay Area stoner-metal band Sleep (whose second, and last, album consists of two songs, one of which is their hour long epic “Dopesmoker”), Om consists of Sleep’s rhythm section, Al Cisneros (bass and vocals) and Chris Haikus (drums). Drawing heavily from Tibetan prayer chants, and featuring, liberal use of some sort of droning sitar-like string instrument on top of mind-numbing (in the best sense of the phrase) distorted bass and booming drums.

In other words, I wouldn’t try to dance to it…

The following tracks are the closing duo on Om’s 2009 album God Is Good (which, despite the implications of the title, contains no Christian proselytizing to speak of):

Om: Cremation Ghat I

Om: Cremation Ghat II
